Taking a short break from The Beatles to say happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there, though I will point out that “Julia,” which I just talked about today, is about a fine a song about one’s mother as there is.
I’m off to have dinner with my mom in just a few minutes, but here are a couple (only a couple since my connection round these parts is slooooooooooooow and it takes about 10 minutes to upload a song) of my favorite songs about mothers.
Mother – Neutral Milk Hotel (with Chris Knox)
A nice cover of another John Lennon classic. This is from the last concert Neutral Milk Hotel performed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2001. If ever there was someone who could expand upon John’s screams in this song, it is Mangum.
Romulus – Sufjan Stevens
A number of folks have posted “Decatur” today, but you have all heard that one already, so I’ll go back to Michigan for this gem. Here is Sufjan at his unvarnished best. On the whole, I prefer the arrangements and scope of Illinois, but he sure can write a pretty little tune, as well.
And a couple I have posted before:
Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives – Voxtrot
I picked up the EP of the same name while I was in Seattle. Really great stuff. I can’t wait for these guys to get some more music out there.
Sleepy California – Her Space Holiday
Loss is everywhere. Make sure to tell the people that you care about (your mom, of course, but others as well) how you feel. You never know when they might be gone. And the time until then should be joyful, not tied up in pain.
Alright, happy Mother’s Day again, and I’ll be back with the final Beatles songs tomorrow.
