Yes, they’re ubiquitous on blogs these days, but there are so many Christmas songs out there that I can’t help the urge to add a post myself. To be fair, I did my best to limit it to songs that haven’t shown up elsewhere so at least you can get something a little bit different.
The Christians and the Pagans – Dar WilliamsSure Don’t Feel Like Christmas – The Mighty Mighty BosstonesThe Christmas Song – The RaveonettesChristmas at the Zoo – The Flaming LipsSometimes You Have to Work on Christmas – Harvey Danger
Okay, to be fair, that Raveonettes song has been posted by a bunch of other people but it’s just so great I couldn’t help myself.
Also, I feel terrible not including “All I Wanted Was a Skateboard” by Super Deluxe, which might be my favorite Christmas song of all, but I’m still without my own computer which means my access to the more obscure music is severely limited. I can suggest that you head over to their website to hear it yourself (scroll down to the bottom, where you’ll also find a great cover of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”).
And while I’m at it, here’s one of my favorite old Saturday Night Live bits, where Steve Martin lists off his Christmas wishes:

Finally, what Christmas post (especially one in the middle of an insane war) would be complete without a mention of that classic “Happy Xmas (War is Over” by John Lennon? Instead of linking to an MP3, though, I’m going to suggest you watch a video slideshow about the genocide in Darfur that Newsweek has put together using the song as a soundtrack. Pretty powerful stuff.
That’s it from me for a little while. I’m heading back home to Washington tomorrow, which means no posting. And, since Oak Harbor is slightly less computed-friendly than the Dartmouth campus, it might go slowly there until I get my beloved iBook back.
Happy Holidays
