I don’t post much music along these lines because I find it far more difficult to talk about than my usual fare of twee, pop, and rock. That said, I’ve simply been listening to 65daysofstatic too much to let their new record go by without some kind of mention. For lack of a better term you could call it post-rock, but it would hardly do justice to what they have created. I want to compare them to Mogwai, and not just because they’re both purely instrumental, but also because of the sense of darkness, the feeling that around every corner waits a stalker ready to pounce, the madness.
This is the soundtrack of a narrowly averted apocalypse. Or maybe not averted but simply postponed. Balanced on the precipice, you stare deep down into the abyss and wonder what might exist out there, beyond our senses and you can’t help but be drawn in, further and further until you look back and discover it is darkness in every direction and the only thing left is the buffeting of the wind and the distant sounds of rattling chains…
Don’t Go Down to Sorrow
When We Were Younger and Better
The album is called The Destruction Of Small Ideas, it came out earlier this month, and it seriously kicks ass.
