Connjur – School Of Seven Bells
Sometimes you hear a song and it instantly clicks. You realize that you’ve been wandering around for days in a stuffy room, and then suddenly the window opens and in bursts a fresh breeze. Your face flushes with the sensation of the cool night air. You take in a full breath and fill your lungs fit to burst. Your mind clears and your skin comes alive in anticipation…
That’s what this song did for me. Vaguely psychedelic, a hint of shoegaze, silken vocal harmonies, and a whole lot of gently insistent dream-pop. It starts out loose, free-flowing. And it slowly builds with new layers introducing themselves in slow waves – they enter, briefly become the center of attention, and then smoothly fold into the general soundscape. And when all the parts come together at around four minutes, it’s one of those rare moments of musical ecstasy where the whole world comes to life and hums around you.
I first heard of School of Seven Bells about 12 hours ago, but this is already a strong contender for song of the year in my book.
The album Alpinisms will be out in late October via Ghostly.
