Good times never seemed so good

Long time, no blog.

As I’ve mentioned a few times before, a significant chunk of the last 13 years of my life has been devoted to debate. It was what kept me interested in high school (which otherwise was a crushing bore for the most part). It’s what I did in college. I coached debate for the five years after finishing college. It’s how I met most of my close friends. In short, it’s been a defining element of my adult life.

I started grad school this year, the first major move into a new world. However, I also kept up a 3/4 time job in the debate world. It was a nice transition – being able to start something new without having to give up on the old entirely. But the season has just come to a close, and I think it’s time to really declare an end on that chapter of my life.

Of course, I’ll still be working at Dartmouth this summer with debate. And I’ll still pop up here and there at tournaments (particularly the four of them in Berkeley next year), but it’ll all be a lot less official and involved.

So anyways, here’s to new beginnings and endless memories of happy times. I want to pick a few tracks that really define my debate-life, but in one sense that would just include basically everything from the past decade-plus. So here’s a couple that carry some especially significant meaning (and no, I’m not going to explain what that meaning is).

Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
Tin Soldiers – Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Third Planet – Modest Mouse
Years Ago – Super Deluxe
Westfall – Okkervil River

Due to the long break (and the large amount of pretty solid good albums that have come out recently), I’ve got plenty to write about in the next few weeks. But in the spirit of springtime in Santa Cruz, I’m going to the beach instead.

Presumably, relatively full-time posting should return tomorrow.
